The Mawai Village Project is the refurbishment of an unused worker’s quarter into a resort. Original structures are retained, with new renovation planned around them. This was not seen as a restriction to the layout planning, but rather an important inspiration to adopt the modern village style for the resort.

Simple and clean interior tone creates contrast to emphasize the clarity of structures. Bare finishes such as cement render serve as a reminiscence of traditional village style reimaged with a modern approach. Scenic landscape surrounding the resort are invited in as central courtyard, providing visual connections to nature for all interior spaces. An outdoor terrace placed between indoor and outdoor elements, allowing interior and exterior spaces to flow into each other, promoting interactions between them.

The result is a reinterpretation of the originals and invention of new ideas that respects the surrounding nature and farmland.
